Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goals were set in 2015 for a period till 2030 to achieve 17 goals including poverty reduction, zero hunger and empower women and girls. These efforts have been hampered by Covid pandemic and global conflicts. What is the progress on SDGs and how close we are to achieve it, lets find out.

Factors affecting achieving SDG targets: There is some progress in regard to poverty reduction, nutrition, child mortality rate. Apart from these we are lagging behind in all other SDG targets. Due to the Covid pandemic and geo-political situations arising out of conflicts which has affected the food value chains and prices of food and fertilizers affecting large population of the developing nations who were dependent on these sectors.

We have lost crucial period from 2020 to the beginning of 2023 for achieving SDG goals. The challenge is that the progress we achieved till 2019 how we can accelerate it. Despite the pessimistic view that in remaining seven years we cannot achieve the targets. The global community has resources and capacity to pull together skills which raises hope that SDG targets could be achieved.

Measures to make SDG targets successful: For SDGs to become a reality reforming the international financial institutions is imperative though fundamental reforms may take time. It is then become necessary that we take benefits of the low hanging fruits. After reforming the multilateral financial institutions we must take into considerations the expectations of the developing nations.

We can address the few financial aspects with non financial means where we can improve the transparency and governance approach and efficiency of the system which can deliver SDGs in a better way so that resource to that extent could be reduced.

Significantly, Localizing SDGs to the the country context is most effective way of achieving it rather than emulating examples from other parts of the world. In this regard making polices with ground realities with an aim to reach people at the last pedestal is very important.

But where do we get resources for such policies? For this macro economic policies are pivotal to give impetus to achieving the goals of SDGs. The policies especially the tax policies are the key that seeks to collect more taxes from sectors which have benefited disproportionately from aggregate income growth. Equitable access to global public goods and fair rules of trade are other crucial necessities to achieve SDGs in remaining seven years time.

Importance of SDGs: SDGs are enabling framework for action. It tackles several 21st century issues which were not given due considerations earlier including cyber crime. One of the main reasons acting as hindrance for the proper implementation of SDGs is that intersectional inequality in society which includes gender, class and caste which has inhibited opportunities for employment, access to education and health etc.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
