India eyes to increase Olympics medal tally through various initiatives

Government is giving emphasis to 14 Olympics sports to boost the country’s medal tally in the summer games which includes archery, shooting, boxing, badminton, wrestling, hockey, cycling, weight-lifting and athletics.

Also, the other sports such as table tennis, swimming, fencing, and rowing would be added for the 2024 Paris and 2028 LA Olympics.

With an eye on Olympics, ‘Target Olympic Podium’ scheme have been started which provides assistance to India’s top athletes. The main aim of the scheme is to provide added impetus towards the athlete’s preparations.

Selected athletes can seek assistance under the customized training under the reputed coaches at institutes having world-class facilities, participation in international competition, purchase of equipment, out of pocket allowance of Rs 50,000,

As part of the motto to achieve excellence in sports the national centers of excellence (NCOE) have been established where athletes would be groomed to achieve international glory for the country. As part of the NCOE best in-class coaches are being provided, sports facilities, equipments, infrastructure and sports science experts.

Besides, one state, one game is being promoted to achieve excellence in 2024 and 2028 Olympics games. Government is providing funding to the states for each sports. The states just have to make sure they adopt under their policy a sport and groom athletes under that sport. Government is also providing special additional facilities and sports training along with enhanced exposure to the sports persons for the specific game.

Khelo India Programme has been introduced to revive sports culture in India at the grassroots level and establish India as a great sporting nation. Under the scheme the talented players are identified in priority sports discipline. Selected athletes are provided annual financial assistance of Rs 5 lakhs per annum for eight years.

In the last few years India has adopted a more holistic approach towards sports and steer away from singly focusing on cricket. Adopting such an outlook India has successfully been able to tread on the path that will lead them towards being the next sports superpower.
