Municipal elections in Belize: Key contest between PUP and UDP

Belize, a country in Central America is heading for the municipal elections on March 6 across the eight towns and two cities in Belize. Elections will be held in Punta Gorda, Dangriga, San Ignacio and Santa Elena, Benque Viejo del Carmen, Orange Walk Town, Corozal Town, and San Pedro Town along with Belmopan and Belize City.

The local offices including the Mayor of Belize City will be elected after the polls. The main contest in the elections is between People’s United Party (PUP) and the United Democratic Party (UDP).

The Elections and Boundaries Department informed that a total of 163 nominations were received on nomination day 21st February 2024. The nominations filed by various parties are as under:

People’s United Party (PUP) 67

People’s Democratic Movement (PDM) 11
Independent Candidates 11

In 2021 elections voters elected a total 67 representatives. This included a mayor in each of the nine communities, 42 town councils and 16 city councillors (ten in Belize City and six in Belmopan).

In the elections People’s United Party won all 9 municipalities and 65 of the 67 municipal seats. The United Democratic Party (UDP) lost 38 municipal seats to win only two seats. Before the municipal elections in 2021 the PUP swept the general elections of 2020.

In 2018 municipal elections the UDP was a big gainer winning 41 seats while PUP could only manage 26. Though PUP gained complete council control of Belize City and Corozal Town, picked up a council seat in Dangriga, and regained complete control of the Orange Walk Town council.

In accordance with section 4(1) of Belize City Council Act, Belmopan City Council Act and the Town Councils Act, elections are held every three years. The following members are elected: Belize City: One (1) Mayor and ten (10) Councillors, Belmopan City and Towns, One (1) Mayor and six (6) Councillors.
