PM Modi to attend ASEAN-India, East Asia Summit during his Indonesia visit

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit during his visit to Jakarta, Indonesia from 06-07 September 2023 where he will exchange views on issues of regional and global significance.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi will travel to Jakarta, Indonesia on 06-07 September 2023 at the invitation of Joko Widodo, President of the Republic of Indonesia. During his visit, the Prime Minister will attend the 20th ASEAN-India Summit and the 18th East Asia Summit being hosted by Indonesia as the current Chair of ASEAN,” according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The forthcoming ASEAN-India Summit will be the first Summit since the elevation of India-ASEAN relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2022. The Summit will review the progress of India-ASEAN relations and chart the future direction of cooperation.

The East Asia Summit would provide an opportunity for Leaders of ASEAN countries and its eight dialogue partners, including India, to exchange views on issues of regional and global significance.

It will be the second time that Prime Minister Modi will be traveling to Indonesia within a year. Prior to this, he attended the G20 summit in Bali in November 2022.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar represented the country at the India-ASEAN Summit and other related summit meetings in Cambodia last year. In the last summit, the partnership was elevated to a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP).

Indonesian President Joko Widodo will preside over 12 meetings during the 43rd ASEAN Summit, set to take place at the Jakarta Convention Center from September 5th to 7th.

These meetings encompass a range of important sessions, such as the 43rd ASEAN Summit plenary session, the 43rd ASEAN Summit retreat session, the 26th ASEAN-China Summit, the 24th ASEAN-South Korea Summit, the ASEAN-Indo-Pacific Forum, and the symbolic handover of the ASEAN chairmanship to Laos.

Significantly this visit comes ahead of the annual G20 summit from September 9th-10th which will be hosted in New Delhi.
