Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s parliamentary constituency Varanasi has been endorsed as the first ever SCO tourist and cultural capital during the year 2022-2023 which will further establish it as one of the most sought-after global tourist destinations.
“Prime Minister Modi thanked all the member states of SCO for endorsing Varanasi or Kashi as the first ever SCO tourist and cultural capital during the upcoming year 2022-2023. This will open doors for better cultural and people-to-people ties between India and the region. As part of the declaration of Kashi as the SCO cultural and tourist destination during the upcoming year, there will be several events by the government of Uttar Pradesh run in collaboration with the central government. Many events would be organized in Varanasi to celebrate this recognition,” said Vinay Kwatra, Foreign Secretary.
PM Modi had once remarked that India cannot become a “Vishwa Guru” without the development of Kashi. He has taken up many development projects in the city aimed at rejuvenating it without hampering its cultural and spiritual values.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken many world leaders visiting India to Varanasi, which is known as the spiritual capital of India. There is a long list of such dignitaries which includes Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and French President Emmanuel Macron.

“PM Modi also gave substantive attention to the field of trade and economy, Humanitarian and development partnerships, and using the age-old civilizational ties between the SCO member states as the foundation on which to build these two layers of cooperation between India and SCO,” he added.
Other highlights from SCO
Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared India’s perspective on the regional and international peace and security including in Afghanistan. He emphasized on the centrality of the aspirations in the means of the Central Asian Republics in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization.
He also called for the need for greater cooperation to fight terrorism in the region. In this context, he emphasized the role that SCO can play including through the work of the SCO RATS which is the structure to combat terrorism in this part of the region.
He also stressed for better regional connectivity which is absolutely essential for greater trade and economic cooperation between India and SCO countries.
Chabahar and other important projects for regional connectivity along with the India-North South transport corridor were also mentioned by PM Modi.
