Pakistan’s dilemma: Victim or sponsor of terror

Pakistan has been facing a catch 22 situation as the terrorists that it created to cause trouble in India are becoming a migraine for it waging a war against its army especially in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan regions.

Pakistani atrocities in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Pakistan has been showing high-handedness in dealing with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which is back firing on the state. In 2017 Pakistan conducted a military operation in the region in which they tries to brutally suppress the insurgency including Taliban and the elements opposed to Pakistan in which hundreds of people died and several went missing. Such incidences only fueled fresh antagonism against Pakistan.

These elements are seeking to build a Islamic Emirate in Pakistan and do not recognize Pakistani army as legitimate.

Reasons for antagonism

The two regions in Pakistan where sub-nationalism is very high are Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, which never wanted to integrate with Pakistan. After coming to power in Afghanistan, Taliban has been supporting them with weapons and moral support. According to Afghanistan Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is its legitimate territory which was taken away from it during second and third Afghan war with British. The Taliban also want to exhibit that it will not allow Pakistan to run its writ in these regions.

The ways that Pakistan has been using to suppress the local sub nationalism in these regions is equally questionable as it is unleashing unparalleled atrocities against the common masses.

Recently Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region witnessed a deadly terror attack in which over 50 people died and hundreds of civilians were injured. The aim of the attack was to challenge the writ of the Pakistani government in the region which has announced to build a dam and refinery in the region.

Can Pakistan succeed?

Pakistan has no democratic means to address the situation and they resort to suppressing even the credible voices. Pakistan created these terror groups and trained them to use against India but they have turned against Pakistan. Afghanistan eyes huge mineral resources in Afghanistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which they do not want Pakistan to use as a result they are turning heat on Pakistan. Even Balochistan has Nationalist army which is fighting against Pakistan. The Pakistani army is incapable of dealing with the situation as there are differences between within the army to how to deal with the situation.

Also Pakistan has to remove some army generals and senior officials apart from transferring and sending them on leave to stop dissidence. Pakistani army also has a sizeable number of Pashtun in its cadre.

Despite Pakistan trying to play as a victim, in reality it is the sponsor of terror which has hand in killing hundreds of Afghans. They have similar plan in Jammu and Kashmir but Indian army has repulsed their plans.

They have a hand in spreading violence in Afghanistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Kashmir. The Punjabi dominated government and army is treating the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Sindh as an occupied territory where not much development has taken place. There is similar resentment in Pak Occupied Kashmir.

Pak bonhomie with China irks local population

Even Pakistani bonhomie with China is equally resented by the local people. China-Pakistan Economic Corridor has totally failed. Their projects are not helping the local people. The electricity cost of such projects is just too high. Even the local people could not get employment as the Chinese brought with them their own engineers and contractors. The people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan do not welcome outsiders. Pakistan has to deploy army to protect Chinese project staffs. There have been many attacks on the Chinese personnel as the people in these regions are not in favour of any new project.
